April 24, 2022
Turmeric, also called Indian saffron, is a plant that is similar to ginger and grows throughout India and in several countries in Asia and Africa. From its scientific name Curcuma longa, Zingiberaceae, Turmeric is distinguished from other spices by its warm, bitter flavor and golden yellow color. It is one of the main ingredients in curry and colombo powder. Turmeric is generally marketed fresh or in powder form.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica (2002), It has been one of the best known, most sought after and marketed spices in the Orient since ancient times.
Show (2003), points out that the Ptolemies used their ports on the Red Sea to ensure the trade of spices, and, with the creation of Roman Egypt, the connection with India was increasingly facilitated. The Cambridge History of Africa (1975) and The Geography of Strabo reveal that under the leadership of Eudoxus (116 BC) and during the reign of the Egyptian prefect Gallus, more than 120 vessels sailed between Myos Hormos and India for the spice trade which became increasingly most important.
Each of these spices having its attractions and its specificities, Turmeric stands out from Cinnamon, Ginger or Pepper thanks to its therapeutic virtues. This is how Turmeric has been used for more than 4000 years in Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine. Several recent scientific studies demonstrate the benefits of this yellow powder and its preventive anti-cancer properties, particularly that of the colon, breast or prostate.
A brief intrusion into the therapeutic universe of Turmeric…
Considered a powerful blood purifier, Turmeric effectively fights bad cholesterol. According to Kundu et al. (2009), or Kim et al. (2005), turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that heals tendinitis, arthritis and wounds. It is also considered a natural medicine to fight against digestive disorders (diarrhea, flatulence, heartburn, bloating). It stimulates digestion, increases bile secretion and opens the appetite. In its traditional use, Turmeric protects the liver and prostate from toxins, food and drug poisoning, it accelerates the healing of gastrointestinal ulcers and helps prevent colon cancer.
As to to its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties…
Not only does Turmeric help detoxify the body, but it also contributes to the prevention of lung, prostate, skin and esophageal cancers.
Health Nature innovation recalls that cancer has doubled worldwide, and estimates indicate that it could triple by 2030. Health Canada estimated 153,100 new cases of cancer in 2006. In addition, scientific journals Cancer Prevention Research (2008) and Molecular Pharmacologyy (2009) reveal that Turmeric limits the growth of lymphocytes and cancerous tumors, while purifying the blood of toxins. Further, associated with ginger or other components such as harpagophytum, Turmeric fights joint inflammation, rheumatism, osteoarthritis or arthritis. It is also effective for joint and muscle pain, tendinitis, neuralgia, sciatica.
